Why Pickleball Is Mentally Tougher Than You Think
By Jorge Capestany, RSPA Master Professional & PTR International Master Professional
Most people look at pickleball and think:
👉 “That looks fun.”
👉 “That looks easy.”
👉 “That’s not that intense.”
But once you actually start competing…
You realize something very quickly:
👉 Pickleball is tough.
Not in the “football or MMA” kind of way…
But in a way that challenges you mentally, emotionally, and strategically every single point.
Let’s break down why.
1. It’s an Individual Sport (Even in Doubles)
When you step on the court…
There’s nowhere to hide.
-
In singles → It’s you vs. your opponent.
-
In doubles → You still feel personally responsible
👉 If you play well, you win
👉 If you play poorly, you lose
There’s no team to blend into. No one else to carry the load.
That alone creates pressure most players aren’t used to.
2. There’s No Coaching During Play
In most sports, you have:
-
Coaches guiding you
-
Teammates helping you adjust.
In pickleball?
👉 You’re on your own.
You have to:
-
Make decisions
-
Adjust strategy
-
Control your emotions
All in real time.
3. No Substitutes—You’re Staying Out There
Having a rough game?
Too bad.
👉 You don’t get subbed out.
You have to:
-
Fight through mistakes
-
Stay composed
-
Figure it out on the fly.
That’s mentally exhausting for a lot of players.
4. Limited Timeouts = Limited Reset
You don’t get endless breaks.
👉 You might only get a couple of chances to reset.
That means:
-
You can’t rely on stopping momentum.
-
You have to manage pressure during play.
5. It Feels Personal (Because It Is)
Pickleball is played close.
Sometimes your opponent is:
👉 10–15 feet away
And you’re exchanging fast-paced shots.
It can feel like:
-
A battle
-
A firefight
-
A direct confrontation
👉 That proximity makes everything feel more intense
6. Line Calls Add Stress
Unlike many sports…
👉 You are the referee.
And so is your opponent.
That creates:
-
Disagreements
-
Frustration
-
Arguments
Sometimes it’s honest mistakes… Sometimes it’s not.
Either way, you have to deal with it.
7. The Honor Scoring System
There’s no scoreboard keeping you honest.
👉 Players track the score themselves.
And what happens?
-
Confusion
-
Disagreements
-
Distrust
It’s another layer of pressure most players don’t expect.
8. Constantly Changing Conditions
Pickleball doesn’t happen in a controlled environment.
You might deal with:
-
Wind / Sun / Cold
-
Indoor vs outdoor differences
👉 And you have to adjust on the fly.
9. No Game Clock
In most sports:
👉 You know how much time is left
In pickleball?
👉 You have no idea how long a game will last.
-
Some games end quickly.
-
Others drag on forever.
That unpredictability adds mental fatigue.
10. The “Diabolical” Scoring System
Let’s be honest…
👉 Pickleball scoring is not simple.
And it creates:
-
Momentum swings
-
Pressure moments
-
Comeback opportunities
You can feel in control one minute…
And completely on edge the next.
So What Does This Mean for You?
If you’ve ever felt:
-
Frustrated
-
Mentally drained
-
Emotionally up and down
👉 You’re not alone.
That’s part of the game.
How Smart Players Handle It
The best players don’t just train their strokes…
👉 They train their mindset.
They learn to:
-
Stay calm under pressure.
-
Accept bad calls and move on.
-
Adapt to conditions
-
Manage momentum swings
