How to Rotate Players in Pickleball Drills (Effectively)

By Jorge Capestany, RSPA Master Professional & PTR International Master Professional

If you’ve ever run a pickleball clinic or group session, you already know this…

👉 Bad rotations kill great drills.

Players stand around too long, and their energy drops.

And what should be a fast-paced, high-rep session turns into… waiting in line.

The good news? There’s a better way.

In this post, I’m going to walk you through simple and advanced player rotation systems so you can:

  • Keep players moving

  • Maximize reps

  • Eliminate confusion

Further down, you will see a video where I show you exactly how we do it.

Why Rotations Matter More Than You Think

Most coaches focus on:

  • The drill

  • The technique

  • The strategy

But overlook something critical…

👉 Flow.

If your rotation system is inefficient:

  • Players get fewer reps.

  • Timing gets disrupted

  • Engagement drops fast

And the session loses its effectiveness.

Start Simple: 2–4 Player Rotations

Options include…

2 Players → Clockwise Rotation

3 Players → “3 and Me” (Coach + 2 Players)

3 Players → 2 vs 1 Rotation

4 Players Standard Rotation

Managing 5 Players (Where Most Coaches Struggle)

Odd numbers are where things get tricky.

Options include…

Option 1: Clockwise Rotation with “On Deck”

Option 2: Slide-In Rotation

Option 3: Auto Slide

6 Players: Where It Gets Fun

With 6 players, you have a lot of flexibility.

Options include…

Option 1: Full Rotation; 4 players on court, 2 players on deck.

Option 2: Champion Side: This is a favorite. One side is the “champion” side.

Option 3: “Squirrel” Rotation (Advanced & Fun): This one keeps players guessing.

8 Players: Avoid This Common Mistake

Here’s what many coaches do wrong:

❌ Put 2 players on one side… and 6 waiting on the other

Result: Too much waiting and too few reps.

The Better Way: Auto-Rotate 8 Players

👉 Balance the court (4 players per side)

This keeps: Lines short / Players active / More touches on the ball.

Handling Odd Numbers (7, 9, etc.)

When numbers get awkward, think small groups.

7 or 9 Players: Split into uneven groups and rotate players between lines

👉 The key: Keep everyone moving, even if it’s not perfectly symmetrical.

The Golden Rule of Rotations

If you take nothing else from this post, remember this:

👉 Minimize waiting. Maximize touches.

Everything you do as a coach should support that.

Because the more balls players hit… The faster they improve.

The video below comes from one of the courses we have in the Lab on Pickleball Drills HQ.

It shows exactly how you can rotate players on the court for the best results.

Final Thoughts…

Great drills are important…

But a great organization is what makes those drills work.

If your players:

  • Understand the rotation

  • Move quickly

  • Stay engaged

Then your sessions will feel:

  • Faster

  • More fun

  • More productive

And that’s what keeps players coming back.
